What Is E0 Board? Is It Safe for Your Family? (Part 1 of 3)
Quick answer
E0 board is a panel whose formaldehyde emission tests at or below 0.050 mg/m³ under China’s GB/T 39600-2021; ENF board, the strictest class, is capped at 0.025 mg/m³. “E0” describes how much formaldehyde a board may release, not what it is made of.
- Same 1 m³ chamber test for all three grades: E1 ≤0.124, E0 ≤0.050, ENF ≤0.025 mg/m³.
- An “E0 ≤0.5 mg/L” figure comes from an older desiccator test and cannot be compared with mg/m³.
- E0 means low emission, not zero formaldehyde.

What does “E0” mean when your contractor says it?
Many parents first hear the term in passing from a contractor, or see it printed on a quotation beside a price. The “E” stands for emission: the formaldehyde a board releases into the room. The lower the class, the less it may release.
So E0 is a test result, not a material. Particleboard, MDF and plywood can all qualify, and two cabinets with the same finish can sit in different grades yet look identical. The only proof of E0 is a lab result against a named standard. That matters at home because formaldehyde is an irritant, and built-in cabinets line the rooms where your family sleeps.
What number makes it an E0 board?
China’s GB/T 39600-2021, in force since 1 October 2021, grades wood-based panels by the formaldehyde they release in a 1 m³ climate chamber. E0 means no more than 0.050 mg/m³. One class stricter, ENF board is capped at half that.
| Grade | Limit (GB/T 39600-2021) | How it is usually sold |
|---|---|---|
| E1 | ≤0.124 mg/m³ | Standard grade, common in Malaysia |
| E0 | ≤0.050 mg/m³ | “Low formaldehyde” |
| ENF | ≤0.025 mg/m³ | Strictest class |
Why do some quotations say “E0 ≤0.5 mg/L”?
That figure comes from GB 18580-2001, an older Chinese standard that used a desiccator test. It has been superseded, yet many Malaysian suppliers still quote it. Because mg/L and mg/m³ come from different tests, the two numbers cannot be compared directly.
Europe’s EN standards have no official E0 class either, so there it is only a market label. If a quotation says “E0” with no unit or standard, ask for both in writing. Our zero formaldehyde board guide lays out the full grade ladder.
Frequently asked questions
Does E0 board mean zero formaldehyde?
No. E0 is a low-emission grade with a ceiling of 0.050 mg/m³. No wood-based board is literally zero, because wood itself contains trace natural formaldehyde.
Which standard should an E0 figure refer to?
The current one is China’s GB/T 39600-2021, measured in a 1 m³ climate chamber, where E0 is 0.050 mg/m³ or less. A figure in mg/L comes from the superseded GB 18580-2001 desiccator test.
