How Much Does a Built-In Wardrobe Cost in Malaysia?
A built-in wardrobe in Malaysia typically costs RM3,500 to RM10,000 per unit, depending on width, height, door type and board grade. Published 2026 Malaysian cost guides put a standard three-door melamine wardrobe at roughly RM2,500 to RM6,000, with moisture-resistant plywood builds running higher.
At Sunpina, wardrobes start from RM3,500 per unit, built only in ENF zero-formaldehyde board.
The number most homeowners are quoted first is a per-foot rate, and it is the least useful figure in the conversation. Two wardrobes of identical width can differ by RM4,000 once you account for internal fittings, door mechanism and what the carcass is actually made of.
This guide breaks the cost into the parts that move it, so you can read a quotation properly rather than comparing one headline number against another.
What a built-in wardrobe costs, by type
| Wardrobe type | Typical size | Indicative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Three-door, melamine board | 8–10 ft wide | RM2,500 – 6,000 |
| Three-door, moisture-resistant plywood | 8–10 ft wide | RM3,500 – 6,000 |
| Floor-to-ceiling, sliding door | 10–12 ft wide | RM6,000 – 12,000 |
| Walk-in wardrobe, open system | Room-dependent | RM10,000 upward |
| Sunpina wardrobe, ENF board | Per unit | from RM3,500 |

The five things that actually move the price
1. Board grade — the cost you cannot see
This is the largest hidden variable in any carpentry quotation, and the one most homeowners never ask about. Two wardrobes can look identical, carry the same finish, and be built from boards that release very different amounts of formaldehyde into your bedroom for years.
Malaysian quotations rarely state the grade. Ask for it in writing:
- E2Above 0.124 mg/m³Not permitted for indoor furniture in many markets
- E1≤0.124 mg/m³The default in most Malaysian quotations
- E0≤0.050 mg/m³E0 board, marketed as “low formaldehyde”
- ENF≤0.025 mg/m³The strictest grade — roughly five times stricter than E1. What Sunpina builds with, on every job
A cheaper wardrobe is often cheaper here. The finish you can see is the same; the board behind it is not.
2. Height
Floor-to-ceiling costs more than a standard 7-foot carcass, because the top section needs its own structure and doors. It also removes the dust shelf above the wardrobe, which most people who have lived with one consider worth the difference.
3. Door type
Hinged doors are the baseline. Sliding doors cost more because the track, rollers and thicker door panels are more expensive than hinges, and they lose you a little internal depth. Handleless or push-to-open profiles add cost again.
4. Internal fittings
An empty carcass with one hanging rod and one shelf is the cheapest wardrobe anyone can build you. Soft-close drawers, pull-out trouser racks, jewellery inserts, internal lighting and glass-front sections each add cost, and each is worth pricing separately so you can choose rather than accept a bundle.
5. Finish
Melamine is the standard surface. Laminate, acrylic, sintered stone fronts and real wood veneer step up from there. Edge banding matters more than people expect — PUR edging seals with no visible glue line and keeps moisture out of the board edge, which is where cheap carpentry fails first in Malaysian humidity.
How to compare two quotations properly
Put both quotations side by side and check that these are stated. If a line is missing, the number is not comparable:
| Ask for | Why it changes the price |
|---|---|
| Board grade in writing (E1, E0 board or ENF board) | The single largest invisible cost difference |
| Carcass thickness in mm | Thinner carcasses sag under load over time |
| Edge banding type | PUR seals fully; cheaper banding lifts in humidity |
| Hardware brand for hinges and runners | Soft-close mechanisms vary widely in lifespan |
| What is excluded | Dismantling, disposal and electrical are often extra |
| Lead time from confirmation | Custom carcasses cannot be rushed |
How long it takes
Production and installation of a built-in wardrobe generally runs 1 to 1.5 months from confirmation. Every carcass, door panel and internal component is cut to your dimensions, so the timeline is set by manufacturing rather than by installation, which is usually a matter of days.
Anyone quoting a two-week turnaround on genuinely custom carpentry is either holding stock sizes or subcontracting to whoever is free.
Common questions
How much does a built-in wardrobe cost in Malaysia?
Between roughly RM3,500 and RM10,000 per unit. Published 2026 Malaysian cost guides put a standard three-door melamine wardrobe at RM2,500 to RM6,000, and floor-to-ceiling sliding-door builds run from RM6,000 upward. Sunpina wardrobes start from RM3,500 per unit in ENF zero-formaldehyde board.
Is a built-in wardrobe better value than a free-standing one?
Built-in costs more up front and uses the space better, because it is cut to your ceiling height and around your walls rather than leaving gaps above and beside it. Free-standing is cheaper and moves house with you. If you intend to stay more than five years, built-in usually wins on cost per year of use.
What board grade should I ask for?
Ask for the formaldehyde grade in writing. E1 (≤0.124 mg/m³) is the Malaysian default. E0 board (≤0.050 mg/m³) is sold as low formaldehyde. ENF board (≤0.025 mg/m³) is the strictest grade available. If a quotation does not state the grade, assume E1 and price accordingly.
Does a wardrobe smell of chemicals when it is new?
Standard boards commonly do, and the advice to air the room for a few weeks is an acknowledgement that the board is releasing formaldehyde. ENF-grade board does not produce that smell, which is why it is chosen for homes with babies, pregnant mothers and elderly residents.
How long does a built-in wardrobe take to make?
Typically 1 to 1.5 months from confirmation to installation, depending on size and design. Every component is made to order.
Can I get a quotation before my house is handed over?
Yes. A quotation can be prepared from the floor plan well before handover. Expect it to be revalidated closer to the actual purchase date, since material costs shift over long periods.
