How Much Does a Kitchen Cabinet Cost in Malaysia?
A custom kitchen cabinet in Malaysia typically costs RM8,000 to RM20,000 for a standard 10 to 12 foot run of top and bottom cabinets, before the countertop. Published 2026 Malaysian cost guides put melamine builds at roughly RM8,000 to RM14,000 and moisture-resistant plywood at RM12,000 to RM20,000.
At Sunpina, kitchen cabinets start from RM8,000, built in ENF zero-formaldehyde water-resistant board.
Kitchens are the hardest room in a Malaysian home to build cabinetry for, and the one where cheap carpentry fails fastest. Heat, steam, splashes and year-round humidity attack the carcass from inside and out. A wardrobe built from the wrong board is a health question. A kitchen built from the wrong board is a health question and a durability one.
This guide separates the parts of a kitchen quotation that genuinely differ from the parts that only look like they do.
What a kitchen cabinet costs, by build
| Build | Typical scope | Indicative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Ready-made modular units | 3–6 ft, fixed sizes | RM800 – 2,500 |
| Custom, melamine board | 10–12 ft top and bottom | RM8,000 – 14,000 |
| Custom, moisture-resistant plywood | 10–12 ft top and bottom | RM12,000 – 20,000 |
| With island | Add to the above | RM4,000 upward |
| Sunpina kitchen, ENF board | Custom, whole kitchen | from RM8,000 |
All figures exclude the countertop, which is priced separately and is the largest single variable in a kitchen. Ranges other than Sunpina’s are drawn from published Malaysian cost guides for 2026 and are given for orientation, not as quotations.
The six things that actually move the price
1. Countertop material — the biggest single swing
Nothing else in a kitchen quotation moves the total as much. Three materials cover most Malaysian kitchens:
| Countertop | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Quartz stone | Hard, non-porous, wide colour range | Most kitchens; the default premium choice |
| Solid surface | Seamless joins, repairable, softer | Curved runs and invisible joins |
| Compact top | Very thin profile, high impact resistance | Minimal modern looks, heavy use |
Sunpina sources quartz from Europe, the United States and Asia. Origin affects both price and consistency of pattern across slabs, which matters on long runs and islands where two slabs meet.
2. Carcass board — where kitchens fail first
The carcass is the box behind the doors. In a Malaysian kitchen it lives with steam from cooking, splashes under the sink and humidity all year. Standard non-water-resistant board swells at the edges, and once a board edge has swollen it cannot be repaired, only replaced.
Two specifications decide whether that happens:
Water resistance. Kitchen carcasses should be water-resistant board, not the standard particle board used elsewhere in the house. Sunpina builds kitchens in zero-formaldehyde water-resistant particle board as standard.
Edge banding. This is the seal around each cut edge, and it is where moisture gets in. PUR edge banding bonds with no visible glue line and no gap. Cheaper banding lifts at the corners within a few humid years, and the swelling starts there.
3. Board grade — the cost you cannot see
A kitchen is the room your family eats in, and the cabinetry runs the length of it. Malaysian quotations rarely state the formaldehyde grade of the board. Ask for it in writing:
- E1≤0.124 mg/m³The default in most Malaysian quotations
- E0≤0.050 mg/m³E0 board, marketed as “low formaldehyde”
- ENF≤0.025 mg/m³The strictest grade — roughly five times stricter than E1. What Sunpina builds with, on every job
4. Length of the run
Kitchens are commonly quoted per running foot, top and bottom counted separately. A tall unit or full-height appliance wall costs more per foot than a base run, because it is more board, more doors and more structure.
5. Hardware and internal fittings
Soft-close hinges and runners, tandem baskets, corner carousels, pull-out pantry units, integrated bins and drawer organisers each add cost. Hardware is also where a quotation quietly saves money: hinges and runners are hidden, and their lifespan varies enormously by brand. Ask which brand is being fitted.
6. Appliance integration
Built-in ovens, hobs, hoods, fridges and dishwashers all need cabinetry cut to their exact dimensions and ventilation requirements. Supply the appliance specifications before production starts. Retrofitting an appliance into a finished carcass means cutting a completed cabinet, and the result is never as clean.
Sunpina can install third-party appliances and accessories for an additional fee, provided specifications are supplied in advance.
How to compare two kitchen quotations
| Ask for | Why it changes the price |
|---|---|
| Countertop material and thickness | The largest single line in most kitchens |
| Carcass board type — water-resistant or not | Decides whether the kitchen survives humidity |
| Formaldehyde grade in writing | The largest invisible difference between quotations |
| Edge banding type | PUR seals fully; cheaper banding lifts and lets water in |
| Hinge and runner brand | Hidden hardware, widely varying lifespan |
| Whether the countertop is included | Frequently excluded from the headline figure |
| Dismantling and disposal of the old kitchen | Usually a separate charge |
How long it takes
Production and installation runs 1 to 1.5 months from confirmation, in line with other custom carpentry. Countertops are templated after the carcasses are installed, which is why the worktop arrives days after the cabinets rather than with them.
Common questions
How much does a kitchen cabinet cost in Malaysia?
Roughly RM8,000 to RM20,000 for a standard 10 to 12 foot run of top and bottom cabinets, excluding the countertop. Published 2026 Malaysian cost guides put melamine builds at RM8,000 to RM14,000 and moisture-resistant plywood at RM12,000 to RM20,000. Sunpina kitchens start from RM8,000 in ENF zero-formaldehyde water-resistant board.
Is the countertop included in a kitchen cabinet quotation?
Usually not. Countertops are priced separately because the material choice moves the total more than any other single item. Always confirm whether a headline figure includes the worktop before comparing two quotations.
What is the best countertop material for a Malaysian kitchen?
Quartz stone is the default premium choice, being hard, non-porous and available in a wide colour range. Solid surface allows seamless joins and can be repaired. Compact top gives a very thin profile with high impact resistance. All three handle Malaysian humidity well; the choice is mostly about look, join visibility and budget.
What board should a kitchen carcass be made from?
Water-resistant board, not the standard particle board used elsewhere in the house. Kitchens face steam, splashes and year-round humidity, and a swollen board edge cannot be repaired, only replaced. Ask for the water resistance and the formaldehyde grade in writing. Sunpina builds kitchen carcasses in ENF zero-formaldehyde water-resistant particle board with PUR edge banding.
Why do kitchen cabinets swell at the edges?
Because moisture reached the cut edge of the board. Every panel is sealed with edge banding, and cheaper banding lifts at the corners after a few humid years. Once water is inside, the board swells permanently. PUR edge banding bonds with no gap and no visible glue line, which is why it is used where moisture is a certainty.
How long does a custom kitchen take to install?
Typically 1 to 1.5 months from confirmation. Carcasses and doors are made to order, and the countertop is templated after the carcasses are installed, so the worktop follows the cabinets by a few days.
Can built-in ovens and hobs be fitted into custom cabinets?
Yes, provided the appliance specifications are supplied before production so the cabinetry is cut to the exact dimensions and ventilation requirements. Sunpina installs third-party appliances and accessories for an additional fee. Retrofitting into a finished carcass means cutting a completed cabinet and the result is never as clean.
